Wallbed guide

Vertical vs horizontal wall beds: which suits your room?

Every Alpha wall bed comes in two orientations. A vertical wall bed has the traditional orientation – head of the bed to the wall – and folds down from a tall cabinet. A horizontal wall bed has a side to wall orientation – long side of the bed to the wall – and folds down from a lower, wider cabinet. Both cost the same in each size. The right one depends on your wall and your ceiling.

Choose vertical if…

  • Your wall is narrow but the ceiling is a normal height. A vertical queen needs 1658 mm of wall, a horizontal queen 2155 mm.
  • You want a king (vertical only).
  • You want tall side cabinets or bookcases to make a full storage wall.
  • The room is long enough for the bed to open 2150–2285 mm.

Choose horizontal if…

  • The ceiling is low or sloping, or there's a window or shelf above the wall. A horizontal queen is 1721 mm high.
  • The room is narrow from the wall to the opposite side. A horizontal bed opens only 1258–1791 mm.
  • It's a kids' room: a horizontal single sits low, at 1187 mm.

What's the same

Both use a steel frame with a spring lifting mechanism, take a standard mattress up to 30 cm thick, come in the same 21 colours and can have a fold-down desk (except the horizontal single and vertical king). Delivery, assembly and installation cost the same.

Still unsure?

Measure your wall width, ceiling height and the distance to the opposite wall, then compare with the table. Or book a free Onsite Consultation & Quote and we'll measure for you. Both are set up side by side in our Gladesville showroom.
